The Lancaster WINTER Knitter’s Retreat 2027 takes place January 8 - 10, 2027, in the historic and elegant William H. Montgomery House at the Lancaster Marriott in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. LWKR2027 is designed as a cozy refuge from the Winter chill — imagine fireside knitting, inspired classes, gourmet meals, and delightful company, all in a magnificently restored Federal-style mansion. With this intention in mind, attendance is limited to 32.
We are so pleased to welcome Laura Nelkin and Sarah Ulrich as our featured teachers!
Friday - Reception with Open Bar from 4:00 to 6:00, followed by a Banquet Dinner and Keynote Address, and then knitting by the fire!
Saturday - Breakfast on your own, and then Class Session 1 in the morning. After an elegant buffet lunch, Class Session 2 in the afternoon, then dinner on your own followed by more knitting by the fire!
Sunday - A magnificent Brunch and the “Sunday Morning Knitting Salon:” storytelling, music, handknits and inspiration!
The cost includes a Gift Bag with LWKR2027 Custom Dyed Yarn, a kit for the Needle Felting Workshop; Friday Open Bar and Banquet Dinner; two Class sessions and Saturday Lunch; and the Sunday Buffet Breakfast and Knitting Salon.
You are responsible to book your own lodging. All classes and included meals will take place in the William H. Montgomery House at the Lancaster Marriott and Convention Center. A block of rooms will be reserved at a special rate for this event. This block will become available on or after September 5 and instructions will be emailed to attendees.
We have intentionally scheduled this retreat in Winter, with the awareness that weather can impede travel and complicate plans. Please register with the understanding that we do not plan on postponing or cancelling this event.

‘Hoodola’ with Laura Nelkin
Hunker down in handmade comfort with Hoodola: A Basic Knit Hooded Cowl. The Hoodola pattern is accessible for all, from fearless beginners to expert knitters looking for a soothing knit to sink their needles into. This oversized hood is perfect for those of us who don’t want their hair crushed by a hat in the winter months… curly girls, we’re looking at YOU!
Hoodola is an inviting clean slate just waiting for your personal touch. You can choose any yarn weight—DK, Worsted, or Aran—to make it as light or as toasty as you like. Hoodola is ready for any creative spin you want to bring to it.
Hoodola is now sized for the whole family, with sizes to fit toddlers on up to a big ‘ol noggin, and a few sizes in between. The pattern is included and has a schematic to make it easy for you to choose a size and adjust to fit!
Skills Required: This class is best suited for intermediate level knitters who have experience reading patterns and working basic increases and decreases.
Supplies: Approx. 360 - 540 yards/329 - 494 meters of DK, Worsted, or Aran weight yarn. We’re recommending Woolstok Worsted, and Laura suggests three skeins of your main color and a 27- color Minis Bundle for an adult size and maximum fun!
Needle Felting & Visible Mending with Sarah Ulrich
Needle Felting on Knits with Sarah Ulrich
Learn to mend and embellish your knits with wool roving and yarn. Needle felting is a great way to cover stains, mend holes or just make a boring knit more whimsical. We will learn felting and mending techniques as well as tips for choosing motifs and colors. In addition we will cover the basics of visible mending with yarn and duplicate stitch.
Skills Required: Mending and embellishing with needle felting is beginner friendly and doesn’t require any special skills.
Supplies: A kit with including 100% wool roving, a knitted wool swatch and needle felting tools will be provided. Bring a darning needle and wool yarn in sport or DK weight to practice duplicate stitch and a wool garment that might need to be mended or embellished if you would like.

Laura Nelkin
Laura joins us from upstate New York, where the sunny season is short, leaving plenty of time to be indoors knitting. Laura travels often to teach knitting techniques and more at workshops around the country.
Sarah Ulrich
Back by popular demand, Sarah Ulrich is a textile artist, educator and owner of Handwork House, Lancaster city’s Community Fiber Art Workshop. Sarah loves all forms of handwork, however knitting is the daily practice that keeps her hands busy and her mind at peace.
