Fair Trade Hand Knits at LYS

We have expanded our selection of Fair Trade Hand Knits this Fall.  Lancaster Yarn Shop works with several Fair Trade companies to ensure that we have exceptionally beautiful Hand Knit sweaters, hats, mittens & socks.

Fair Trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability.  The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of goods.

Meet the knitters of our beautiful children's sweaters:  Mercedes and Alberto Males from Otavalo, Ecuador.  Mercedes says that the textile arts have been passed down in her family for generations, and she strives to continue this rich family tradition today.  She supports her local community by purchasing wool from a factory in nearby Guano.  To ensure the quality of the wool, it’s collected from the finest Ecuadorian and Peruvian lambs and is then double washed and dyed to achieve the vivid yarn colors.

We have a great selection of sweaters for children and adults--stylish, warm, eco-friendly & fair trade.  We also have mittens, great big cozy socks, wool hats and swinging alpaca capes.

Saturday, September 17, 2011
9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Our plans for a Fall Knitting Retreat, like many a good knitting pattern, have been modified!  Join us here at the shop for a day of knitting instruction, good company, and high tea!  Hosted & taught by Wendy Ellis & Barbara Grubbs, we will enjoy a day of instruction in the finer points of lace sock knitting.

Included are a copy of the book Knitting on the Road by Nancy Bush, a set of double pointed needles, sock yarn suitable for the pattern, instruction and High Tea at Ye Olde Tea Shoppe in Intercourse, PA.  We will cast on and begin to knit the 'New England' sock pattern, an especially beautiful and wearable lace sock.

This is an intermediate to advanced level class, you must know how to knit on double pointed needles, and have knit at least one pair of socks.

amish country beanie pattern

Our popular amish country beanie is now for sale as a .pdf on Ravelry.  The amish country beanie is  a simple striped beanie with a scalloped edge that is reminiscent of 19th century Pennsylvania Dutch wedding socks.  Designed in iconic PA Dutch colors, this hat can be made in a beanie style or with some slouch.  The hat pattern is also available in a kit at the shop.  Check it out!

moebius cowl curl pattern

We have patterns on Ravelry!  Our most recent addition is the moebius curl cowl pattern, available for sale as a .pdf--we taught this class on Tuesday & it was fun. Several of the knitters have moved on to their second cowl, it is a quick project & an intriguing knit.  Check it out at the link below.  You do not need to be a member of Ravelry to make a purchase.
